Agrivoltaics combines agriculture and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, with photovoltaics providing shade.
Agrivoltaics combines agriculture and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Growing crops under a PV array has been found to significantly impact three factors affecting plant growth and reproduction – air temperature, direct sunlight and atmospheric demand for water. Shade provided by the PV panels results in a cooler daytime and warmer nighttime temperature than a traditional open-sky planting system.[1] Researchers at Arizona State University have developed various PV unit versions that include an optical element that redirects light toward the PV cell. This solution diffuses light of certain wavelengths and allows it to pass through the PV unit to facilitate the crops underneath the PV unit to grow. The positioning of solar PVs above crops makes more efficient use of land.

Have you initiated contacts or technological transfer agreements? The WIPO GREEN database is a free, solutions oriented, global innovation catalogue that connects needs for solving environmental or climate change problems with tangible solutions. The database consists of user uploads of needs and solutions, green technology patents from the WIPO Patentscope database, imports from select partner organizations, relevant knowledge material, and relevant expert profiles. Some of the unique features of the database are: Always-on AI-assisted auto-matching, user uploads tracing and alerts, full-text search for solutions based on long need descriptions, and the Patent2Solution search function for finding commercial applications of a patent. Free registration is required for uploading.
