Agriculture accounts for 70 percent of global freshwater withdrawals (FAO) and extreme droughts 20 times more likely under current climate conditions (WWA·2022). Farming methods that save water and increase yields are desperately needed.
Seed Film Cultivation (SFC) was invented using biodegradable films and drip irrigation to enable maximum yields while reducing water, labor and greenhouse gas emissions.
1) Solution Ideas
Drip irrigation is most efficient among all the irrigation methods and reported to help in achieving yield gains of up to 100% and water savings of up to 40-80% (Burney·2009; Lodhi·2014; Kumari·2014). However, even with drip irrigation, soil evaporation is inevitable.
Drip irrigation under plastic film mulching was introduced. The average soil evaporation of the soil-covered drip irrigation without film was 2.4 times of mulch treatment (Q Jia·2021). This method is widely applied to cotton cultivation in China's Xinjiang region, but problems such as environmental pollution caused by plastic and excessive labor input have not been resolved.

2) Solution SFC
Using biodegradable films (biofilms) and newly developed Seed-attacher and Mulcher, SFC compensates for the shortcomings of film mulching drip irrigation by:
* Step_1: Producing Seedfilm
Seed-attacher makes a Seedfilm by attaching seeds to a biofilm, while creating germination gaps around the seeds.

* Step_2: Mulching Seedfilm
Mulcher, towed by a tractor, spreads the Seedfilm and covers it with a thin layer of soil, ensuring seed-to-soil contact, while installing drip lines under the Seedfilm.

3) SFC, a food security solution for water-scarce countries
Using Seed-attachers, Mulchers, biofilms and drip irrigation, SFC is suitable for large-scale cultivation of row crops such as rice and wheat, enabling maximum grain production with minimal water, labor and GHG emissions.
